Take your strategy execution to the next level with the essential ingredient of project governance. This will cultivate accountability, engagement, and overall success.

I was reluctant to put governance as the subject of this email. The fact is, governance is not sexy. Yet project governance is an essential ingredient for strategy execution success.

Governance is glue for getting things done.

Governance generates traction.

Strategy execution governance (OR project governance OR execution architecture) is the set up of your implementation to ensure accountability, generate engagement and overall success. It includes how you design committees, working groups, meetings, and reports to make the best decisions, in the best way. Done properly, project governance is much more than a project management tool.

Tips for the week

When you next gear up for implementation of an initiative, ask consider these questions:

  • What set up is likely generate the most optimal business outcome?
  • How do you best establish the execution to deliver behavioural change?
  • How can your governance reduce risk and optimize innovation?
  • What governance is best suited to the workplace culture and organizational maturity?

I can promise you from working on over 50 implementations, that execution architecture makes the difference between failure and success. Case study

Here’s an example of governance gone wrong. I was once asked by a Finance function to advise on a failing program that they were very concerned about.

Program overview:

An initiative to implement a new digital business model.

Symptoms of failure:

  • Lack of progress. Over budget.
  • Failing pilot, not sure why.
  • Those involved fragmented and de-energized .
  • Lack of clarity amongst steering committee members.
  • Lack of clarity amongst project resources.
  • Business leader focused on BAU troubleshooting.

Recommendations?

What governance elements do you think could help bring this program back on track? Email me by end of the week, and I’ll publish the best answer next week, and let you know what I recommended.
